World Encyclopedia: History and symbols
The Time of War
A war of 27 years that began with conflict in the Council and ended with the barrier to the normal world.
The Time of War is the great war in Anglien’s history, and it lies about three hundred years in the past.
What the students learn
In the first history lesson, Professor Vetharin tells the class that the war lasted twenty-seven years. It started because the Council could not agree on how Dherak should be allowed to be used, and when it ended, the barrier stood between Anglien and the normal world. The war cost more Angels and Drúir their lives than all three centuries before it put together.
The barrier is still there. See Anglien and the barrier.
A trail back to the war
The very first lines of the book are about the time after the war. An excerpt from an old chronicle tells how the name Godrand was struck from the Council’s archives thirteen years after the war ended. No reason is given, and nobody went looking for one. It is the only word written on the outside of the envelope when Chris’ letter arrives.
Spoiler (revealed in chapter 12)
In the history book, Chris sees a drawing in the margin of the symbol that was on his letter. The caption says it is the seal of Section XIII, which was used to mark protected places during the war.
