Déynáir

The school for young Engle and Drúir: a castle with seven towers on an island the ordinary world cannot see.

First appears in chapter 1

Déynáir is the school that Chris suddenly gets a letter from. The letter lies on the windowsill of his room at the care home Fjordly. In it the school is called “Déynáir, the school for young Engle and Drúir”, and it is signed by Deputy Headmaster Guvinor Haltora. The name is used both for the school and for the island it stands on. In Anglia a ship sails from the Fonté Hall to the island.

The castle

The school is housed in a castle on a hill in the middle of the island. It has eight floors and seven towers, and one of the towers has a flat roof. The river runs in front of the castle, and to the north rises the mountain.

Inside, the corridors are long and winding, and there are neither signs nor arrows. For the first few days, Chris gets lost. There are also corridors you won’t find by looking for them: see the secret passages.

Everyday life at the school

The new students first sleep in a long hall under the roof. Once they have been through the island test, they are given rooms for two and a path, and everyone eats together in the dining hall, where you sit by year. Each year has its own room; the new students have the First-Year Room, with windows right down at the river.

The timetable includes Dherak, combat, history, transformation, healing, potions and spells, and there is a lesson where the students learn to talk to their Amícûs.

Rules that keep being repeated

Headmaster Edrin says it at a meal in the dining hall, before the test: nobody is to go up onto the upper part of the mountain. The ban applies every year.
