Guvinor Haltora

The school's strict deputy headmaster, with jet-black eyes and a wolf at his side. His name is signed at the bottom of Chris's letter.

Haltora, chapter 12

Haltora’s name is signed at the bottom of Chris’s letter from Déynáir, and he is the first teacher the new students meet. He is tall and dark-haired, and his eyes are completely black, with no white in them at all. At his side walks a large black wolf with yellow eyes: Fenris.

Taciturn and strict

Haltora never says more than he has to. He leads the first years down to the river and shows them how to get across without getting wet. When Chris is standing out on the river with no idea what to do, Haltora says just one word: Onward.

When he later catches sight of the small silver key in Chris’s hand, he goes completely still, and his scent turns from glow to cold. He warns Chris to be careful with it and doesn’t explain why. When Chris asks, he answers with something else entirely.

Teacher

Haltora teaches Dherak and combat. In lessons he wears a thick combat robe over a black tunic, and his forearms are covered in scars he never talks about.

Relationships

Spoiler (revealed in chapter 11)

When Chris's team has come home from the island test, Haltora is waiting at the castle door. He walks them past the infirmary and up under the roof, where he shows Retia and Chris to a door each. The bed plate carries the path the island has given them. Haltora says nothing about it.

Spoiler (revealed in chapter 12)

In lessons, Haltora is harder on Chris than on anyone else. When he senses how much Dherak there is in Chris, Chris realizes it isn't anger. Haltora is afraid of it.
