Swords and blood binding

The students' swords and daggers are forged with their own blood, so only they and their bloodline can use them.

First appears in chapter 7

Every new student at Déynáir has to have a sword and a dagger. You get them at Smedens Hule in Tés Aváir.

From the outside, Smedens Hule is just a narrow door. Inside, a large, warm hall opens up, with weapons on every wall and a deep, singing sound coming from the forge.

The blood

The smith takes a drop of blood from the student and one from the student’s Amícûs and mixes them in a small glass. The blood is melted into the blade, and from then on the weapon belongs to its owner. A sword forged this way can only be used by its owner and the owner’s bloodline. In anyone else’s hands, it is just metal.

Ahra asks for his dagger to be made of silver. The swords come within the first week of the school year, while the daggers are sent the next day. The dagger costs one gold daler, see currency. The smith does not sell the sword, because there is blood in it. The school pays for it, as it always has.

Spoiler (revealed in chapter 7)

For everyone else, the blood in the glass glows gold. When it is Chris' and Alôpex's turn, it glows white instead, and for a brief moment Chris sees something that could be a face in the light. The smith looks at the glass for a long time and sets it apart from the others.
